In a move aimed at ensuring electoral integrity, Chief Minister Dr. David Moininah Sengeh, who also serves as Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Constitution Review Committee, participated in a critical session at the National Electoral Commission (NEC).
The meeting focused on addressing constitutional gaps that have become more evident as the country approaches the upcoming elections. Dr. Sengeh expressed gratitude to the SLPP Secretariat for prioritizing the work of the committee, emphasizing the importance of the constitutional review process. “This committee deserves the importance it is being given,” he stated, underscoring the urgent need to address pressing electoral issues, especially those concerning the composition of constituencies, including chiefdoms and additional sections.
One of the significant challenges discussed was the situation in Pujehun and Kambia, where existing constitutional provisions were inadequate in addressing specific electoral challenges. Dr. Sengeh assured that the party had resolved these issues amicably, signaling a commitment to ensuring unity and fairness within the electoral framework.
A major topic of the discussions also centered on the composition of delegates for the National Women’s Council. Dr. Sengeh, who successfully oversaw the last National Women’s Conference elections despite previous difficulties, highlighted the importance of transparency and inclusivity. “Before you rush to make claims, I conducted those elections with no issues,” he remarked, reaffirming the SLPP’s dedication to democratic processes.
The atmosphere at Unity Hall, where daily meetings are held, has been one of inspiration and solidarity. “Every time I sit and listen, watching the faces of the delegates, I feel more inspired,” Dr. Sengeh said, reflecting on the vibrant democratic spirit within the party.
As the SLPP prepares for the upcoming elections, the Constitution Review Committee’s efforts aim to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process. With the party’s commitment to inclusivity and democracy, the SLPP is positioned to address challenges and contribute to building a more equitable political landscape in Sierra Leone.
The review process not only seeks to address past oversights but also strengthens the party’s foundation as a beacon of democratic values in the nation.
