The Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA) has strengthened its regional presence through a strategic partnership with the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), aimed at improving operational efficiency and regulatory compliance in the maritime sector.
The partnership was formalised during a recent signing ceremony at the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) headquarters in Monrovia. SLMA Executive Director, Dr. Daniel Kaitibi, and LiMA Commissioner, Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that focuses on key areas such as capacity building, technology transfer, and enhancing maritime security.
This collaboration is part of Sierra Leone’s broader strategy to modernise its maritime sector and align with regional best practices, positioning the country as a key player in the industry. Dr. Kaitibi, who was accompanied by SLMA Board Chair Bintu Myers and other senior officials, stressed the importance of leveraging Liberia’s extensive maritime experience to enhance Sierra Leone’s regulatory frameworks.
Under Dr. Kaitibi’s leadership, SLMA is undergoing a transformation aimed at increasing revenue generation, improving enforcement mechanisms, and ensuring alignment with international standards. He emphasised that this partnership with Liberia would play a vital role in achieving these objectives.
LiMA officials, including Board Chairman Hon. S. Tornorlah Varpilah, expressed confidence that the collaboration would drive innovation and strengthen regional cooperation, fostering sustainable growth and improved governance in West Africa’s maritime sector.
The partnership marks a significant step toward enhancing both countries’ maritime operations, ensuring that they remain competitive and aligned with global maritime standards. The signed MoU will serve as the foundation for future initiatives aimed at transforming the region’s maritime landscape.
