Dr. Daniel Kaitibi, Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA), has joined the global maritime community in observing World Seafarers Day 2025 on Wednesday 25th June 2025, calling for a united stand against bullying and harassment at sea. This year’s theme, “My Harassment-Free Ship,” underscores the urgent need for safer, more respectful workplaces onboard vessels worldwide.

In an official statement, Dr. Kaitibi reaffirmed SLMA’s strong commitment to fostering inclusive, secure, and respectful environments for all seafarers.

“This year’s theme is a bold call for zero tolerance toward harassment at sea something we must all champion. A harassment-free ship is not a luxury; it is a necessity,” Dr. Kaitibi declared.

He highlighted the SLMA’s ongoing efforts to address workplace abuse in the maritime sector. These efforts include the integration of anti-harassment training in certification programs, the reinforcement of regulatory frameworks, and active collaboration with both national and international stakeholders to uphold the dignity and rights of seafarers.

Dr. Kaitibi emphasized that creating a respectful and safe work environment is not only essential for seafarers’ well-being but also crucial for the advancement of Sierra Leone’s maritime workforce.

“A safe ship is not only one that avoids physical danger it is one where every crew member feels respected, valued, and protected,” he concluded.

World Seafarers Day, celebrated annually on June 25, is an initiative of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) aimed at recognizing the invaluable contributions of seafarers to global trade and the world economy.
