In a concerted effort to strengthen immunization services and protect public health, Sierra Leone’s Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) has ramped up its activities nationwide. This week, the EPI, in collaboration with health partners, conducted targeted initiatives to address ongoing health challenges, including a measles outbreak and preparations for future vaccine rollouts.

In response to a recent surge in measles cases, EPI officials carried out a five-day Periodic Intensified Routine Immunization Supervision (PIRI) in three districts. This initiative aimed to ensure that children in the affected areas receive life-saving vaccines. The proactive approach is part of the government’s broader strategy to curb the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases and protect vulnerable populations.

In a collaborative effort to raise public awareness, the EPI, in partnership with the Health Education Program and other stakeholders, organized a two-day workshop. Held from March 19 to 20, the session focused on developing comprehensive communication materials for upcoming immunization campaigns. These materials will support the rollout of the Mpox vaccine, increase awareness of the newly introduced malaria vaccine, and promote routine immunization services.

Health experts emphasize that effective communication is vital for dispelling misinformation and encouraging vaccine uptake, especially in remote communities where access to accurate health information is often limited.

From March 20 to 21, health officials from all 16 districts gathered at New Sella Spot to review last year’s Ebola preventive vaccination campaign. The review highlighted key achievements in vaccine coverage, while also addressing gaps and challenges encountered during the process.

Discussions focused on improving future campaigns, managing vaccine-related adverse events, and adopting innovative strategies to enhance immunization delivery. Participants shared best practices and explored solutions to logistical and operational hurdles.

These ongoing efforts reflect Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening its immunization infrastructure and ensuring that essential vaccines reach all communities. By addressing emerging health threats and improving vaccine delivery systems, officials aim to safeguard public health and reduce the burden of preventable diseases.

As immunization campaigns continue across the country, the EPI and its partners remain dedicated to increasing vaccine coverage and fostering a healthier future for all Sierra Leoneans.
