Sierra Leone is set to host a pivotal United Nations side event on June 11, 2025, focusing on the intersection of climate change, disability, and mental health critical areas often overlooked in global environmental policy.

Scheduled from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM in Conference Room 12 at UN Headquarters in New York, the event seeks to highlight the unique vulnerabilities faced by people with disabilities in the context of the climate crisis.

The initiative is spearheaded by President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, who will lead high-level discussions calling for urgent, inclusive, and actionable solutions.

“Climate change exacerbates existing inequalities,” President Bio stated. “It is crucial that we include the voices of persons with disabilities in our climate discourse to drive effective change.”

His opening remarks will set the tone for an event aimed at bridging policy gaps and advancing global awareness.

Participants including policymakers, disability rights advocates, health experts, and climate scientists will share personal experiences, data, and recommendations to promote inclusive environmental and mental health policies.

The event also underscores the importance of integrating disability rights into global climate action frameworks, while drawing attention to the mental health impacts brought on by environmental stresses especially in vulnerable and marginalized populations.

As global leaders continue climate negotiations at the UN, Sierra Leone’s leadership in convening this conversation reflects its commitment to inclusive climate resilience and equity in international policymaking.

This timely event is expected to inspire other nations to adopt more comprehensive, intersectional strategies that address the diverse needs of all citizens in the face of climate change.
