Sierra Leone has commemorated the indispensable contributions of midwives in a ceremony spotlighting their pivotal role in maternal and child healthcare. Esteemed dignitaries, development partners, and media gathered to celebrate the event, recognizing midwives as frontline heroes, particularly in the face of climate-related adversities.

Under the theme “Midwives: A Vital Climate Solution,” the event, attended by Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officers, United Nations Population Fund representatives, and Ministry of Health directors, emphasized the criticality of midwives in healthcare provision. Hon. Mahoi, addressing attendees, highlighted midwives’ multifaceted roles as healthcare providers, community leaders, and first responders during emergencies.

Minister Mahoi underscored the government’s acknowledgment of midwives’ significance in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-being. She lauded midwives for their relentless efforts in delivering life-saving interventions to underserved populations, contributing significantly to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates.

Despite commendable progress, Minister Mahoi highlighted a global shortage in the midwifery workforce. She praised the UK’s Saving Lives in Sierra Leone Programme and UNFPA’s support in strengthening the country’s midwifery sector, leading to a substantial increase in skilled midwifery personnel from fewer than 100 in 2010 to nearly 1,400 presently. However, Sierra Leone still falls short of meeting the global target of four midwives per 10,000 people.

In her closing remarks, Minister Mahoi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bolstering midwifery and maternal healthcare through policy development, infrastructure investment, and continued collaboration with development partners. She expressed gratitude to UNFPA Sierra Leone and reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring rights and choices for all Sierra Leoneans.
