Sierra Leone has reaffirmed its dedication to the New Agenda for Peace during a statement by H.E. Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabbah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
This commitment underscores the necessity of addressing inequality and ensuring multilateralism remains the backbone of global peace efforts.
Minister Kabbah emphasized the urgent need for preventive diplomacy, effective peacekeeping and continuous peace building initiatives to ending global conflicts.
He highlighted the crucial role of national ownership in these processes, reflecting Sierra Leone’s approach to fostering stability following its decade-long civil war, which lasted from 1991 to 2002. This internal conflict has shaped the nation’s understanding of the importance of addressing root causes of instability, including economic disenfranchisement and political marginalization.
Sierra Leone’s post-war recovery model serves as a powerful example of how inclusive governance can lead to sustainable peace. The Minister noted that the nation’s experience illustrates the value of localized strategies that respond specifically to community needs. “We must act early and decisively to tackle the underlying issues that can lead to conflict,” Kabbah stated.
In addition to domestic strategies, Sierra Leone remains active in the international arena, contributing to peace and security through its role in the United Nations Security Council, as well as regional organizations such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union. This engagement reflects the country’s commitment to collaboration and its proactive approach in addressing a range of conflict scenarios, calling for a collective response to avert potential crises.
Conclusively, as global tensions rise and complex conflicts emerge, Sierra Leone’s ongoing commitment to the principles of inclusivity, early intervention, and national ownership showcases its dedication to building a peaceful and stable future, both within its borders and in collaboration with international partners.
