Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Switzerland, H.E. Ambassador Lansana Gberie, has reinforced the country’s commitment to global humanitarian protection by participating in the launch of the Group of Friends for the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel in Geneva.
The initiative builds on Sierra Leone’s leadership in shaping international declarations and advancing global action aimed at protecting humanitarian workers and ensuring respect for International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
Drawing from its own experience of a devastating civil war, Sierra Leone recognises the critical importance of safeguarding humanitarian personnel and upholding IHL principles. Ambassador Gberie’s participation in the launch underscores the country’s dedication to promoting peace, justice and human dignity at the international level.
The Group of Friends seeks to strengthen global awareness of the protection and assistance needs of humanitarian workers and disaster-displaced persons, and Sierra Leone’s involvement reflects its long-standing commitment to humanitarian causes. The country’s experience in refugee protection, post-conflict recovery and community development has positioned it as a respected voice in global humanitarian discussions.
Sierra Leone’s leadership in this area has been described as a source of inspiration for the international community, with expectations that its advocacy will contribute meaningfully to improved protection for humanitarian personnel worldwide.
