Sierra Leone has achieved a significant milestone in its educational sector by assuming the Chairmanship of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for a three-year term. The Minister of Education, Mr. Conrad Sackey, announced this development, emphasizing its importance for Sierra Leone’s education system and the opportunities it presents for implementing necessary changes within the WAEC framework.
During a recent meeting on January 4th, 2024, held at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Freetown, Minister Sackey shared this exciting news with the leadership of the National Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (NCPSS). He declared 2024 as the “Year of Education” in Sierra Leone, highlighting three significant global activities that would greatly benefit the nation.
Responding to concerns raised by the NCPSS, Minister Sackey reassured the government’s commitment to meeting the demands of teachers and school authorities. He disclosed that an overwhelming 99% of the Ministry’s budget is allocated to recurrent expenditure, covering crucial aspects such as salary payments, school fee subsidies, and public examination fees, among other necessary expenses. With only 1% of the budget remaining for capital expenditure, the government is diligently working to optimize available resources.
Furthermore, Minister Sackey emphasized the importance of the upcoming WAEC meeting scheduled to take place in Sierra Leone in March. This gathering holds immense significance, providing a platform for strategic discussions and collaboration with other member nations.
