Sierra Leone athletes continue preparation ahead of next month`s Kaduna Junior and Senior championship. Thirty athletes are under intensive training at the Siaka Stevens stadium on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to get the athletes physically and mentally ready for the Games.
Speaking to A-Z press media, the country`s 100 & 200 metres fastest, Ibrahim Karim Bangura said he is coping with training, adding that there is light at the of the tunnel in next month`s games. He said: “My current mindset is to think too far ahead,” Ibrahim said. “It is hard to predict what will happen, so I’m training very hard and get ready to secure a gold medal in next month`s senior championship in Nigeria.
He however called on the National Sports Authority (NSA) & the Ministry of Sports (MOS) for support ahead of the games. He emphasized that they athletes are working so hard to showcase their talent.
“We`ve been twice turned down by the Ministry of Sports so we don’t want the same to repeat again. We know football is the most popular sports in the country but Athletics have brought many medals home compared to what government has invested in football without any good result,” Lemon bluntly stated.
Kadiatu Kanu the country`s 100 metres female fastest added that the Abidjan and Nigeria disappointment is still fresh in the minds of athletes, so we don’t want such to repeat and called on the authorities to do all they can in making this trip successful.
“I have trust in the Minister of Sport, Ibrahim Nyelenkeh and the Executive Director, Dr. Kenneth Brima because they have both been involved in sports and know what it means for the athletes, he concluded.
The Association has last month held a National Championship to enable them to selects the best athletes that will represent the Country in the Games.
