The Government of Sierra Leone has welcomed the landmark advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on July 23, 2025, regarding states’ legal obligations under international law to combat climate change.

This historic opinion, requested by the United Nations General Assembly, addresses the responsibilities of countries to prevent environmental harm and mitigate the effects of climate change a matter of critical importance to vulnerable nations like Sierra Leone.

Speaking at a press conference, government officials emphasized the significance of the ICJ’s opinion, describing it as a turning point in the global fight against climate change. “This historic opinion represents a pivotal moment in our collective efforts to address climate change,” stated a government spokesperson.
