The Sefadu Magistrate Court, located at the D.O. Barracks in Koidu City, Kono District, has publicly destroyed a significant quantity of confiscated marijuana in a symbolic move to combat drug abuse and trafficking in the region.
The public destruction was led by the newly transferred Resident Magistrate, Victor S. S. Ansumana, and witnessed by a large crowd of bystanders gathered at the front of the court premises.
Magistrate Victor S. S. Ansumana explained that the destroyed marijuana had been confiscated during police operations and was in the possession of individuals who were investigated and later charged to court. Upon conviction and sentencing, the court seized the drugs as exhibits, which were stored securely until the official destruction.
He emphasized that the public destruction is a key part of the judicial process aimed at preventing confiscated drugs from re-entering society, where they could contribute to increased consumption and associated criminal activity.
“This destruction is not just symbolic it is necessary for the safety of our communities. It ensures that these harmful substances do not find their way back into the hands of the public,” said Magistrate Ansumana.
Magistrate Ansumana also noted that destroying the drugs publicly serves as a deterrent to both dealers and users, reinforcing the message that drug-related offenses will be met with firm judicial action.
“This process is essential in protecting both present and future generations. It also sends a strong warning to those involved in the illegal drug trade,” he added.
He reassured the public that the judiciary in Kono District remains committed to upholding justice and serving as a solution to societal problems, urging citizens to obey the law, as “it is the law, not individuals, that is supreme.”
Present at the event were ASP Dauda Marrah and Komba Sourie, Support and Information Officers attached to the Tankoro Police Division in Koidu City. Both officers praised the court for its role in reinforcing the work of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).
They highlighted that the drugs destroyed were initially seized by police officers during operations, after which suspects were investigated and charged along with the illicit substances found in their possession.
“This public destruction strengthens our work and closes the chapter on these cases. It also helps address the fear that seized drugs might somehow return to the community,” ASP Marrah stated.
Both officers took the opportunity to warn drug dealers and users across Kono District and the nation at large. They reaffirmed the SLP’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on drug-related offenses, stressing that drugs continue to destroy families, damage relationships, and ruin the futures of potential productive citizens.
“We are calling on all those involved in the transport, sale, and consumption of illegal drugs to stop. The SLP will not relent in prosecuting offenders,” they warned.
