Samson Deen has been re-elected as President of the African Paralympic Committee (AfPC) for another four-year term, securing 38 out of 40 votes, with two delegates abstaining.
The 2025 African Paralympic General Assembly, held on Sunday, November 9, at the Marriott Hotel in Accra, Ghana, brought together representatives from 42 national Paralympic Committees and 20 international observers.
Deen’s re-election, with 95% of the votes, extends his leadership of the continental body until 2029. He first assumed office in 2021 and has since led initiatives aimed at improving inclusivity, athlete participation, and the visibility of Paralympic sports across Africa.
Notably, Deen led the successful hosting of the first-ever African Paralympic Games in Ghana and was given a renewed mandate to continue his transformative agenda for the continent.
Other elected executives for the next four years include First Vice President Dr. Hayat Khattab, Second Vice President El Aouni Hamid, Treasurer Suleiman Isah, and Secretary General Ignatius Elletey, along with seven regional and zonal representatives.
In his address following the election, President Samson Deen expressed gratitude for the renewed confidence placed in him and his colleagues: “We started this journey with the aim of strengthening the administrative structure of the African Paralympic movement, and we have made progress. However, the task ahead is demanding, and success will depend on collective effort and commitment.”
He also emphasized the importance of professionalism and strategic financial planning in running the Committee: “There are no allowances in this system. The Committee relies mainly on membership fees and grants from the International Paralympic Committee. We must, therefore, adopt a results-oriented approach that reforms our structures, enhances operations, and creates opportunities for all member countries.”
President Deen also announced several major upcoming initiatives. The country that meets the hosting requirements will be selected to host the 2027 African Paralympic Games. Additionally, the West African Para Games will be held in Ogun State, Nigeria, this December, with hopes for other regions to host future editions. “Those elected today must be ready to work, because this mandate is about delivering impact,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Sierra Leone National Paralympic Committee (SLE-NPC) has congratulated Samson Deen on his landslide victory, a testament to the confidence the Paralympic family has in his leadership.
“May I once again congratulate you on your re-election as President of the African Paralympic Committee. I was delighted to attend, participate, and witness the General Assembly,” said SLE-NPC Acting Secretary General Zaianb Wilson. “Despite challenges, you continue to produce remarkable results. We appreciate your dedication and salute your efforts. We have no doubt that you have the vision and skills to lead the African Paralympic Movement again.”
