Aside from electing the highest number of women for Sierra Leone’s sixth Parliament which accounted for 27.5% of total Parliamentarians elected in the just concluded Local Council and Members of Parliament elections, Kenema District has elected the youngest Member of Parliament (MP) in the history of the country since independence in April 1961.
This milestone is built around the spirited young lawyer who has stood her ground among the League of Women in Sierra Leone. 26-year-old Alice Kornya Sandy Esq has nurtured leadership outfits not only among her ranks but also the family she emerges from. As a young woman, she realizes to serve as the voice of her people thereby making better representation in the political spotlight. Barrister Alice Kornya Sandy has become one of the prominent women ahead of the opening of the Sixth Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone to have met the political thresholds of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) representing Kenema District.
Her winning does not come as a surprise, because she had made relentless efforts by championing a massive voter education to her people as well for the success of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) which led to the upper-cut defeat of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) during the June 24th multi-tier elections. Fair enough, long before ECSL’s declaration of the campaign period, Barrister Alice has begun spreading out her message coupled with genuine developmental inroads, particularly for the wider scope of Constituency 016 which she represents. These overwhelming strive she footed left voters not changing the course of the game but making a good number of valid votes for SLPP. Matter-of-fact, Alice Kornya Sandy Esq was seemingly embraced by the will of her people.
Apparently, it was revealed that she emerged as the only political aspirant that reached doors, as well as touched souls even without a symbol at the initial process.
Regardless of all, Barrister Sandy’s outstanding pointers proved loads of constituent members thinking that they were disadvantaged and cheated by their previous parliamentarians who barely made bogus promises and paying little or no attention to the needs of the people.
Therefore, Honourable Alice Kornya Sandy’s election to Parliament is a manifestation of youths as torchbearers for the present-day development and women’s empowerment courtesy of President Bio-led government.
The Hon. Vice President, who launched the Revised National Youth Policy in July 2021 informed participants of H. E. President Julius Maada Bio’s New Direction Government’s commitment to supporting youth empowerment.
Dr Juldeh mentioned the need to give visibility to women through the creation of the needed spaces for them to occupy.
Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to harnessing the potential of youth for national development.
In May 2018, President Julius Maada Bio also pledged his government’s commitment to empowering and increasing the socio-economic participation of young people through their involvement in agriculture, enhancing creativity and innovation, improving the entertainment and performing arts industry and women’s representation in elective and appointed positions.
Alice Kornya Sandy ESQ falls in both categories (youth and women empowerment).
Alice Sandy Esq is being identified by the glorious occasion of Sierra Leoneans as the youngest Member of Parliament-elect in the history of the country and her Constituency 016 respectively.
Even though she is the youngest female MP, she has decided to turn her back in taking the queue from the bench in order to serve her people by recognizing the solution to the problems faced by her people otherwise Constituency 016.
Barrister Alice has got an existing leadership skills and educational experience for the better livelihood of her people.
