S/LEONEAN, LIBERIAN ARRESTED FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING

Police in Sierra Leone have arrested a Sierra Leonean and a Liberian national at Gelehun checkpoint as they were allegedly smuggling drugs in a black jeep to neighboring Liberia.

Fomba Swarray a Liberian resident was arrested by police on Wednesday, alongside Ahmed Junior Sesay at Gelehun checkpoint with drugs suspected to be kush.

The unlicensed black jeep was intercepted at the Gelehun checkpoint for inspection; during the operation police discovered a consignment of kush in the possession of Ahmed Junior Sesay and Fomba Swarray, the driver of the said vehicle.

According to the police spokesman Fomba Swarray owns the vehicle and is a Sierra Leonean citizen living in Liberia.

“Both Swarray and Sesay have been arrested and currently under investigations at the southern police station” said police spokesman Senu.

He continued that the black jeep is parked at the police station as the owner of the said vehicle is also part of the crime.

Police spokesman also revealed that the two suspects have been transferred to the custody of the Sierra Leone police for specialized investigations.

He concluded that the two suspects and exhibits have been handed over to the transitional organized crime unit southern region for further investigations.

The (TOCU) crime unit is responsible for all transnational organized crime.

Meanwhile, police in southern Sierra Leone said they are embarking on thorough search at various checkpoints in a bid to crack down on drug peddlers and traffickers.

Police spokesman Senu said there has been an incessant influx of drugs in society leading to high rate of addiction amongst youth and criminal offences.
