In a significant stride towards bolstering data collection and analysis capabilities, Sierra Leone inaugurated the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) Steering Committee, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s developmental trajectory.

Chaired by Dr. Sartie M. Kenneh, the Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health, the inaugural assembly convened key stakeholders from various governmental bodies, including Statistics Sierra Leone, alongside representatives from international organizations such as UNICEF and UNFPA.

The session commenced with prayers and introductions, fostering a collaborative atmosphere essential for the committee’s mission. Dr. Kenneh underscored the Ministry’s steadfast commitment to supporting the MICS-7 initiative, setting a tone of dedication and collaboration.

UNICEF Representative Mona Korsgard and UNFPA Deputy Representative Sibeso Nwluluma echoed Dr. Kenneh’s sentiments, highlighting the indispensable role of data in informing development efforts.

Drawing from past MICS surveys, Mr. Moses Williams, Chairman of the Stats SL Council, offered valuable insights, emphasizing a willingness to provide expertise for the forthcoming endeavor.

Mr. Andrew Bob Johnny, the Statistician General, extended appreciation for ongoing efforts and assured continued support for MICS 7, emphasizing its significance in guiding policy decisions.

Dr. Francis Smart outlined the committee’s responsibilities, stressing the pivotal role each member plays in ensuring the success of MICS 7.

Mr. Mohamed Koblo Kamara, Acting Director of Demographic, Health, and Social Statistics at Statistics Sierra Leone, elucidated the session’s objectives, emphasizing alignment and cooperation among stakeholders.Eleanor Keeble, the MICS Consultant, guided committee members through the selection process for questionnaire modules, facilitating discussions on customization to meet Sierra Leone’s specific needs.

The meeting concluded with proposed next steps, including finalizing the questionnaire and establishing a Technical Working Group, alongside a proposed timeline to ensure timely implementation of MICS 7.

Mr. Samuel Asumana, Director of Communication & PR at Stats SL, adeptly moderated the session, ensuring active participation and seamless proceedings.
