In a solemn ceremony held at the RSLAF joint force command headquarters in Cockerill Barrack Wilkinson Road, Freetown, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) marked the 15th Annual Armed Forces Day on February 18, 2024, with a special appreciation and dedication service.
The event, attended by dignitaries including the Inspector General of Police, the Mayor of Freetown, defense attachés from the US and the UK, retired and senior military officers, saw the Chief of Defence Staff, Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio, and the Distinguished Guest of Honor, Colonel (Rtd) Muana Brima Massaquoi, among others, gracing the occasion.
Colonel Massaquoi emphasized the significance of honoring both serving soldiers and fallen heroes who have dedicated themselves to maintaining peace, orderliness, and sanity in Sierra Leone. He highlighted the evolution of the celebration, noting the shift from commemorating Mayong Day to encompassing the RSLAF’s endeavors in conflicts and natural disaster responses. The day, he underscored, stands as a testament to the sacrifices made for the nation’s peace and security.
In an exclusive interview, Colonel Brima urged military personnel to uphold loyalty, discipline, and dedication in their duties while respecting human rights. He also called upon civilians to continue supporting the RSLAF in various capacities to sustain the nation’s peace.
The commemoration featured a special sermon by Chief Imam Major Alhaji Yayah, who emphasized the importance of Prophet Muhammad’s teachings on peace and harmony. He outlined specific guidelines for military personnel, emphasizing principles of mercy, professionalism, and fear of God in leadership.
Additionally, Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Father Lebbie led a Christian service, focusing on the theme “Search Me O God.” Father Lebbie stressed the significance of Armed Forces Day as a time for reflection and spiritual renewal, urging personnel to align with divine instructions and ethical standards.
In conclusion, Father Lebbie paid tribute to fallen soldiers and emphasized the accountability of actions, quoting scripture to highlight the importance of ethical conduct and service to the nation.
