The increase in road accident in Bo has become a grave concern to the executive members of the Bike Riders Union (BRU) in Bo District.
The Vice Chairman of BRU in Bo, Mohamed Kamara told this medium that over thirty bike riders in Bo were involved in road accidents with over five fatalities so far recorded since January this year.
He attributed it to the failure of bike riders not observing the road signs and cautioned their members to strictly adhere to the road signs.
Mr. Kamara acknowledges that even though riders are important but they should ride with caution to ensure that they are not involved in accident.
He however said that they have a doctor that will take care of the riders when they are involved in accident, which is part of the privileges in seeking their welfare.
Speaking to this medium at the Bo Government Hospital, victims of road accident said that some of the riders are very impatient, when it comes to over-taking on the highway.
One Juliet Sulaiman said that it will be good for the owners of bikes to give their property to responsible riders who have the spirit of patience on the road.
‘’ they can ride behind an on-going vehicle without patient and overtake with speed without knowing that there an incoming vehicle,’’ she said, adding that they are also impatient when they reach the zebra crossing points and these are all responsible for road crashes or accidents .
The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority, according to Madam Sulaiman are expected to give license to those who are trained and quality riders but noted that ‘’ it is like most of the riders are not trained and qualify to ride on the road, which the government needs to look into with all seriousness if we want to see accident rate is reduced in Bo and the country as a whole.
