Haja Mary Betty Sandy, a retired nurse has involved herself in agriculture to compliment President Julius Maada Bio’s mainstay agenda which is “Feed Salone”.

Tracing back in the early 1990s, Haja Mary Sandy was keen to becoming a leading figure in agriculture whiles practicing as a professional nurse within Kenema District.

Through the AMULOMA Farmers Group Hangha, which she manages over ten hectares of IVS swamp land, ten acres of groundnut fields, and five acres of cassava farm, applying the same dedication she exhibited during her over 40-year nursing career.

The AMULOMA Farmers Group is a prominent beneficiary of the FSRP through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Kenema District.

Sandy also holds a card as member of the National Federation of Farmers in Sierra Leone, Kenema District.

Sandy began her farming journey in 2018, right after retiring from nursing. Her deep commitment to agriculture is driven by a strong belief in the importance of food self-sufficiency. “The idea of food self-sufficiency will only be realized when the country’s citizens choose to go into farming,” she asserts.

In an exclusive interview with this medium, she commends President Julius Maada Bio for launching the Feed Sierra Leone Project, which aims to enhance agricultural production and ensure national food security.

Sandy views farming as essential to improving food security in Sierra Leone and is determined to make a significant contribution.

As a prominent farmer in Kenema District, Sandy highlights the need for Sierra Leoneans to consume what they produce and produce what they consume.

Her extensive experience and leadership in both nursing and farming make her a role model in the community.

Sandy’s remarkable transition from healthcare to agriculture is an inspiring testament to the power of dedication and resilience. Her efforts contribute not only to the local economy but also to the vision of a self-sufficient Sierra Leone.
