In an unwavering effort to combat the rampant issue of cable theft, Regional Police Commander South, AIG Brima Kanneh, has addressed the growing challenge posed by this criminal activity. Under his leadership, the Sierra Leone Police is steadfast in its commitment to apprehend those responsible for such thefts.
The most recent breakthrough in this ongoing crackdown occurred on Thursday, October 5th, 2023. Two individuals, Kantay Bangalie and Junior Moriba, were taken into custody along Prince Williams Street, UBC School, Bo, at approximately 19:00 hours, temporarily halting their alleged involvement in the theft of a significant quantity of aluminum electrical cable.
A series of community engagements has been orchestrated, fostering discussions on preventive measures against cable theft and other major crimes within our communities, especially in the Southern region. These meetings have played a pivotal role in promoting collaboration and idea exchange among participants. Such dialogues have provided an invaluable platform for progress in the fight against cable theft and related crimes across the region.
The Regional Police Commander highlighted the global surge in cable theft incidents, attributing this rise to the unique properties of copper and aluminum, including high electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance. As the worldwide demand for copper and aluminum continues to grow, so does the occurrence of cable theft, resulting in significant economic losses and disruptions to critical infrastructure in numerous countries.
Investigations have unveiled that the stolen copper and aluminum cables from various locations in Bo have raised concerns over security due to the heightened demand for these materials. The suspects, Kantay Bangalie and Junior Moriba, have implicated another individual, Tikeh, who is currently evading capture. Allegedly, they all conspired with him to commit cable theft, utilizing a commercial motorbike with registration number AUY 788 for their illicit activities.
The ownership of the stolen aluminum cable has been claimed by the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA). The Police have enlisted the assistance of the procurement office to assess the value of the confiscated item. In the ongoing investigation, the Police are supported by the recovery of the stolen cable, the apprehension of the suspects, and the alleged involvement of the motorbike in the crime.
Leading the charge in this investigation is Detective Sergeant 11272 Brima S.A, whose unwavering dedication underscores the Police force’s determination to bring the culprits to justice and curb the growing threat of cable theft in the region.
