Prosecution Strikes off Charges Against Former APC Minister of Youth Affairs

The former Member of Parliament, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran respectively between 2008 and 2018 and of No. 7 Rahim Drive, Magbema, Makeni, Alimamy kamara appeared before Justice Hannah Bonnie at the High Court in Freetown on the 4th October, 2021.

Making his submission, the defense lawyer Africanus Sesay said he has just received affidavit for additional witness from the State Counsel.

In another submission, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer J.T.Tarawally made an application for an amendment of the indictment of the particulars of offence on count five, six and seven.

The State Prosecutor made the application pursuant to section 148 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Act No.32 of 1965.

The State Counsel continued to state that the application is made to meet the circumstance of the prosecutor and if granted it would cause no injustice to the accused person.

In another application made by the State Prosecutor applied that in respect of count one and count three on the indictment must be discharged as they offered no evidence on these counts.

Defense Counsel Africanus Sesay thanked the State Prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Commission for reducing the burden on them.  However, Justice Hannah Bonnie discharged the accused person on the above counts. The charges has been reduced from nine to seven counts charge.

The judge granted the amended application made by the State Prosecutor. The amended charges will be read by the court registrar to the accused person on the next adjourned date.

It could be recalled that on the 8th July, 2021 the Anti-Corruption Commission filed an indictment against the accused person Alimamy kamara, on corruption matter for failure to declare assets, income and liabilities contrary to section 122 (a) of the Anti- Corruption Act, No. 12 of 2008 as amended by the Anti-Corruption Act No 9 of 2019, while he was Member of Parliament, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran between 2008 and 2018. The matter has been adjourned to the 18th October, 2021.
