Since his appointment as the Principal of the then-Eastern Polytechnic in 2014, Professor Mohamed Tailu Lahai has been widely recognized as a result-oriented and seasoned academic. His leadership immediately facilitated the transformation of the Eastern Polytechnic into the now Eastern Technical University (ETU) of Sierra Leone, a milestone achievement under the presidency of Julius Maada Bio.
Before the official establishment of Eastern Technical University by President Bio, Professor Lahai faced a political challenge which led to his removal from the office. However, in a testament to President Bio’s commitment to democratic principles, Professor Lahai was reinstated to continue steering the institution in the right direction. Upon his return, he wasted no time in revamping the university’s administration and spearheading a series of transformative initiatives.
With a distinguished career that includes valuable contributions and numerous academic publications during his tenure at Njala University, Professor Lahai has introduced several developmental programs across ETU’s faculties. These programs have positioned Eastern Technical University as one of the fastest-growing academic institutions in Sierra Leone, offering innovative and practical courses designed to empower students with job-creating skills. The university serves the educational needs of Kenema, Kailahun, Kono, and the country at large, preparing students to become entrepreneurial and self-employed leaders.
One of the core priorities of he institution’s administrative excellence is its youngest Registrar, Mr. John Juana, who brings an impressive academic record from Njala University. Under his leadership, the Eastern Technical University administration has achieved international standards, further solidifying the university’s reputation as a hub of academic excellence. Together with Professor Lahai and Mr. Juana has been hailed as champions of higher education in Sierra Leone.
The Eastern Technical University’s success story includes expanding its reach with new programs in Kono, Bunumbu, and most recently, Segbwema in Kailahun District. These efforts ensure that higher education remains accessible and impactful across the Eastern region.
Professor Lahai has consistently expressed gratitude to President Julius Maada Bio and the Minister of Technical and Higher Education for their unwavering support in university’s journey toward excellence. Through their combined efforts, the university has emerged as a beacon of hope for Sierra Leone’s youth, producing graduates who are well-equipped to drive economic development and innovation in the country.
