The Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education Professor Alpha Wurie has on the 26th November, 2021 assured CSO’s and Media personnel about his government commitment to changing the face of tertiary education.
He started by outlining the manifesto promises which have been achieved by the line ministry. Like the increment of Universities in the country. “Before now there were three Universities in the country, Njala University, the University of Sierra Leone and EBK University. The rationale for the upgrade of the tertiary institution to universities is to accelerate the county’s Education progress and meet with the current Educational standard in the world,” Prof Wurie said.
He continued to explain the increments government has made in awarding Both National and international Scholarships to deserving Sierra Leoneans regardless of the tribes and region. “Our government has given grant-in-aid to sons and daughters who have taught for 25 years and we aim at reducing it as time goes on,” he noted.
Professor Wurie broadens the discussion on the much talk about student’s loan scheme and the process of getting it and the payment. The guarantor must be a NASSIT holder for some time and that Students are going to pay 2 million per year after they have graduated or work for the government within a certain time.
The minister stated creativity and skills development are key driving tools for moving a country forward. Donors have given $20 million for the improvement of tertiary education in the country.
