Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the Kazakh capital, Astana, on Monday for the second China-Central Asia Summit.

Kazakh Air Force fighter jets took off to escort Xi’s plane after it entered the country’s airspace.

Upon arrival at Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport in Astana, President Xi was welcomed by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and other senior officials, including Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu.

A young Kazakh woman presented Xi with flowers. Kazakh honor guards lined up on both sides of the blue carpet to pay their respects. Meanwhile, Kazakh children holding the national flags of China and Kazakhstan warmly welcomed the Chinese president.

Accompanied by Tokayev, Xi watched the parade of the Kazakh honor guards. Helicopters carrying the flags of China and Kazakhstan flew over the airport. The heads of state of the two countries also enjoyed an artistic performance by Kazakh children.

On the way from the airport to his hotel, people warmly welcomed Xi by holding red banners reading “Warm welcome, President Xi Jinping!” and “Long live the friendship between China and Kazakhstan!”
