His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died recently.

In a statement released on July 12, 2025, President Bio conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the government and people of Sierra Leone, acknowledging the late President’s enduring legacy and immense contributions to Nigeria and the broader West African region.

President Bio described Buhari’s death as a “devastating loss,” highlighting his role in strengthening democratic governance and steering Nigeria through a transformative era.

“President Buhari led Nigeria during a challenging yet defining period. His leadership helped to navigate complex national issues while promoting unity and economic development,” President Bio noted.

He underscored Buhari’s stature as a regional statesman whose vision extended far beyond the borders of Nigeria.

In his condolence message, President Bio extended sympathy to Buhari’s family, offering words of comfort during their time of grief. He also addressed current Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for unity among the Nigerian people in the face of national mourning.

“Our thoughts are with you all,” President Bio said, reaffirming the long-standing historical and cultural bonds between Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

The passing of Buhari has triggered an outpouring of tributes from leaders across the African continent. As a former Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Buhari played a key role in promoting peace, security, and cooperation among member nations.

President Bio’s tribute not only honored Buhari’s legacy but also underscored the importance of visionary leadership during moments of regional and global uncertainty.

In his closing remarks, President Bio called on West Africans to reflect on the values that defined Buhari’s leadership integrity, unity, and public service and to carry forward the vision he championed.

“The legacy of Muhammadu Buhari will resonate far beyond his presidency, shaping Nigeria’s future and strengthening regional solidarity in West Africa,” President Bio concluded.
