On November 21st, 2024, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio officially launched the Youth Employment Promotion and Livelihood Empowerment Programmes at Kallon Car Park, Lumley Beach in Freetown.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs in partnership with UNDP, aims to enhance economic opportunities for young people across the country.

During the launch, President Bio expressed his deep emotional connection to the transformative stories shared by beneficiaries of previous interventions. “I believe that youth economic empowerment is critical for economic growth and creating a sustainable and resilient economy,” he stated.

The newly unveiled programs include the distribution of 200 tricycles (Keke), 50 local fishing boats equipped with ultra-modern fishing accessories, grants to female youth-led organizations, and business start-up grants for 864 rural youth.

Additionally, the initiative will provide 200 youth with farm placements and hands-on training in aquaculture, poultry, and crop production.

Like other African nations, Sierra Leone is faced with high unemployment rates among young people. These initiatives aim to address the pressing need for economic empowerment and skill development.

President Bio emphasized his government’s commitment to continuing these interventions, stating, “We believe we can transform the huge potential of our youthful populations into concrete economic opportunities.”

The launch attracted local leaders, youth representatives, female-led organizations, Cso’s, and community members, all eager to learn about the opportunities these programs will provide.

The government hopes to create a more vibrant economy by investing in the youth while reducing poverty and enhancing community development.

In Addendum, the success of these programs will be closely monitored to ensure they effectively meet the needs of the youth and contribute to the nation’s overall economic progress.
