President Julius Maada Bio has officially launched the Multiphase Programmatic Approach for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) at the Freetown Conference Centre on 8th July 2025. This ambitious initiative is designed to transform the country’s water and sanitation infrastructure, ensuring that every Sierra Leonean has access to safe drinking water and improved hygiene services.
Speaking at the event, President Bio reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to building resilient infrastructure that prioritizes the health and well-being of citizens.
“Together, we will achieve this goal,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a collaborative effort in successfully implementing the program.
The launch comes at a crucial time, as many communities in Sierra Leone still face significant challenges in accessing clean water and proper sanitation facilities. The WASH program adopts a phased approach, focusing on sustainable solutions and community involvement to ensure long-term impact and success.
President Bio also acknowledged the vital support of international partners, particularly the World Bank, whose financial and technical contributions have been instrumental in advancing national development efforts. This partnership is expected to strengthen the implementation of WASH by enhancing both funding and technical expertise tailored to the country’s needs.
Beyond public health improvements, the initiative is expected to drive economic growth by reducing waterborne diseases, lowering healthcare costs, and boosting productivity. The government believes that by investing in water and sanitation, a healthier and more prosperous environment can be created for all Sierra Leoneans.
In conclusion, as Sierra Leone embarks on this transformative journey, President Bio’s call for collective action highlights the crucial role of collaboration among government institutions, civil society, and international development partners in achieving universal access to clean water and sanitation services.
