On July 23, 2025, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio received the Head of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, Most Worshipful Brother William Ramsey McGhee, along with members of the District Grand Lodge of Sierra Leone and The Gambia, at State House in Freetown.

The visit comes ahead of the official installation of Hon. Justice Nicholas C. Browne-Marke as the new District Grand Master of the Scottish District, scheduled for Saturday.

In his opening remarks, Justice Browne-Marke explained that the visit was a traditional courtesy call, required before any formal ceremonial functions by the Grand Master. He also emphasized the delegation’s dual purpose, noting that they would participate in charitable activities, including a visit to Connaught Hospital, aimed at supporting local healthcare efforts.

Grand Master William McGhee expressed gratitude for the warm reception extended by President Bio and conveyed greetings on behalf of the Scottish Constitution. He highlighted that while the visit holds ceremonial importance, it also focuses on humanitarian service.

“We are here not just to celebrate, but also to contribute to the fight against cancer as part of our charitable commitments,” he stated, reaffirming the Grand Lodge’s dedication to philanthropy and community well-being.

In response, President Bio commended the Grand Lodge delegation for their long-standing tradition of humanitarian service. He acknowledged the positive impact of their charitable contributions, especially in the health sector, and reaffirmed his government’s support for such initiatives.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Sierra Leone, it is a pleasure to welcome you,” President Bio remarked. “What impresses me most is the charitable work you do to help others. Please enjoy the peaceful and welcoming atmosphere of Sierra Leone.”

The engagement underscored the importance of international partnerships in addressing critical social challenges. The planned charitable visit to Connaught Hospital, focusing on cancer care, represents a tangible step toward improving healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone an area receiving increasing national attention due to rising health concerns.

As the installation ceremony for Justice Browne-Marke approaches, the visit from the Grand Lodge delegation highlights Sierra Leone’s openness to international collaboration and shared humanitarian values. This interaction not only reinforces ceremonial ties but also shines a light on the enduring commitment to service, philanthropy, and the collective effort to uplift communities.
