In a landmark recognition of his transformative leadership, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio has been awarded two prestigious continental accolades for his outstanding contributions to gender equality, girl child education, and human capital development in Sierra Leone.
The “African HeForShe Champion of the Year 2024” and the “Presidential African Intelligence Award 2024” were conferred upon President Bio by Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda, former President of Malawi and founder of the Joyce Banda Foundation, and Princess Dr. Ocansey founder of the Nakotech Centre for Excellence.
The awards highlight President Bio’s pivotal role in advancing women’s rights, increasing female participation in governance, and implementing policies that foster gender equity across all sectors. Under his leadership, Sierra Leone has enacted landmark reforms, including the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act, which has significantly enhanced female representation in politics and economic participation.
The HeForShe Movement, launched by UN Women in 2014, engages men as key advocates for gender equality. The African HeForShe Champion Award recognizes African leaders who demonstrate exceptional commitment to women’s empowerment. President Bio’s administration has made remarkable strides in this regard, particularly through education and legal reforms.
