In a solemn address to the nation last night, President Julius Maada Bio declared a state of national emergency to combat the escalating crisis of Kush addiction and substance abuse. The president, visibly concerned about the devastating impact of this epidemic on communities, families, and individuals, has vowed to take decisive action to stem its spread.

Kush, a synthetic substance wreaking havoc across the country, knows no bounds, affecting individuals regardless of their social status, age, gender, or religious affiliation. With a sharp rise in addiction cases and alarming mortality rates among young people, the president has deemed it imperative to mobilize all resources in a concerted effort to address this pressing issue.

The presidential declaration of a national emergency underscores the gravity of the situation and the government’s unwavering commitment to tackling drug and substance abuse. A multi-faceted approach has been outlined, emphasizing prevention, treatment, law enforcement, and community engagement.

A National Task Force on Drugs and Substance Abuse has been established, bringing together key government ministries, security and law enforcement agencies, community organizations, religious institutions, and individuals in recovery from substance use disorders. This collaborative effort aims to implement a comprehensive strategy to combat the Kush epidemic effectively.

The five-pronged strategy includes prevention through awareness campaigns and promoting healthy alternatives, treatment through the establishment of rehabilitation centers staffed by trained professionals, support services to aid in recovery and integration, law enforcement efforts to disrupt the drug supply chain, and community engagement to garner support for the fight against Kush.

Under the supervision of the Presidential Advisory Team, the National Task Force will lead the charge in eradicating Kush and other harmful substances from communities across the country. In the coming days and weeks, dialogue with the public will be initiated to raise awareness about the core mandate of the task force and encourage full participation in the fight against Kush.

While addressing the Kush epidemic remains a top priority, the president also highlighted the nation’s progress in various sectors, including human capital development, education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Despite challenges, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring stability and progress for all citizens.

As the nation braces itself for the arduous task ahead, the declaration of a national emergency serves as a rallying cry for unity and collective action against the scourge of Kush addiction and substance abuse. With determination and concerted effort, the government and the people stand ready to confront this crisis and reclaim a future free from the grip of drugs.
