His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio is making international headlines at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) by announcing the successful entry into force of the BBNJ Agreement a landmark achievement in global ocean conservation.

Upon his arrival in New York, President Bio confirmed that Sierra Leone had deposited the 60th and final ratification required for the agreement to come into effect. This milestone fulfils a pledge he made earlier this year at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference held in Nice, France.

The BBNJ Agreement which stands for Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. It represents a major step forward for global ocean governance and highlights Sierra Leone’s leadership role in international environmental efforts.

“This achievement is not only a victory for our nation but also a milestone for global efforts in ocean conservation and sustainable practices,” President Bio stated. His leadership underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to renewed multilateralism in addressing urgent environmental challenges.

This year’s UNGA coincides with the commemoration of several significant anniversaries: the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the 20th anniversary of the Ezulwini and Sirte Declarations. President Bio expressed enthusiasm about engaging in meaningful discussions that aim to shape the future of global cooperation.

“These milestones remind us of our collective responsibilities and the need for unified action to tackle global issues,” he noted.

Key discussions at the UNGA are expected to focus on climate change, sustainable development, and enhanced international cooperation. President Bio’s strong advocacy for ocean conservation aligns with broader global efforts to protect marine ecosystems, which face increasing threats from pollution, overfishing, and climate change.

Sierra Leone’s instrumental role in advancing the BBNJ Agreement not only reaffirms its dedication to environmental stewardship but also positions the country as a proactive contriutor to global sustainable development. As President Bio engages with fellow world leaders, he aims to strengthen partnerships that will support Sierra Leone’s national development goals and improve the well-being of its citizens.

In conclusion, President Bio’s presence and accomplishments at the UNGA stand as a powerful testament to Sierra Leone’s active participation in international dialogue and its unwavering commitment to protecting the planet for future generations.
