The Sierra Leone Squash Association in a bid to diversify sport in the country has undertaken the introduction of squash game to 20 schools in Sierra Leone i.e fifteen schools in Freetown and 5 in the provinces.
Under the leadership of Basseem Siad Mohamed said the association has decided to take the game first to the schools as they plan to capture them young. Baico Sesay is the national coach pictured with the kids, also said it is a move to take the over- concentration on football and athletics;10 racquets and 5 balls will be given to every school.
He added that training sessions of pupils in each school will commence and financial incentive will be given to P.E. teachers and coaches who will be attached.
Squash is a far less known sport in Sierra Leone. But the current president of the association, Basseem plans to change the narrative.
Every year he sponsors a tournament and gives huge financial incentive to winners. He was unanimously voted to be president of the association in absentia and is an avid player of the game himself.
Sierra Leone has been represented to play squash at the Commonwealth games in the recent past. This current move by the association is going to create awareness and understanding of the game; while many are clueless about the game.
