In a significant move to commemorate the Day of the African Child (DAC) on June 16th, the Pleasant Foundation Sierra Leone has successfully concluded a comprehensive school sensitization and education campaign in Freetown. The initiative, aligned with this year’s DAC theme, “Education for all children in Africa, the time is now,” targeted critical issues affecting the nation’s youth, including access to quality education, rising drug abuse, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) challenges.
The outreach program saw the Pleasant Foundation team visiting several schools, including Excell International, CIA Academy, and Future Hope International. The foundation engaged students and faculty in crucial discussions about the importance of education and the alarming increase in drug abuse and SRHR issues.
“Education is the foundation upon which children can build brighter futures,” stated Precious Kargbo, Project Coordinator of the Pleasant Foundation Sierra Leone. “We are committed to ensuring that every child in Sierra Leone has access to the knowledge and resources they need to succeed.”
Kargbo emphasized the importance of prioritizing education, particularly for marginalized communities and girls. The discussions also addressed the growing concerns around drug abuse and SRHR, highlighting the need for comprehensive, age-appropriate education and support services.
Civil society activist Abdulai Dauda Samura underscored the gravity of the situation, saying, “The alarming rise in drug abuse and SRHR challenges among our youth is a grave concern. We must equip our young people with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and lead healthy, fulfilling lives.”
The school visits were met with enthusiasm and gratitude from the participating institutions. “We are grateful to the Pleasant Foundation for bringing this critical information to our students,” said Fatmata Bangura, Principal of Future Hope International. “This kind of engagement is essential in empowering our youth and building a brighter future for Sierra Leone.”
The Pleasant Foundation’s efforts are part of a larger initiative to celebrate the Day of the African Child and advocate for the rights and well-being of children across the continent. By leveraging the theme “Education for all children in Africa, the time is now,” the foundation aims to amplify the urgent need for comprehensive, accessible education and support services for Sierra Leonean youth.
Concluding the campaign, Kargbo highlighted that as the country navigates the challenges of the post-pandemic era, the Pleasant Foundation’s school sensitization and education campaign serves as a vital step in addressing the critical issues facing the nation’s young people and paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous future.
