The National Chairman of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), together with the party’s leadership and membership, has extended warm congratulations to Edmond Sylvester Alpha on his appointment as Chief Electoral Commissioner (CEC) and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) on 16th March 2026.

In a letter dated 12 March 2026, the party described the appointment as a “critical national office,” noting that it reflects the confidence placed in Alpha’s ability to safeguard and strengthen the integrity of Sierra Leone’s democratic and electoral processes.

The letter further stated: “We trust that under your leadership, the Commission will continue to uphold the highest standards of independence, transparency, fairness, and professionalism in the conduct of elections.”

The PMDC also reaffirmed its willingness to work cooperatively with the Commission.

“The PMDC remains committed to constructive engagement with the Commission in promoting credible, peaceful, and democratic elections that reflect the will of our nation,” the statement noted.

It can be recalled that in February 2026, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio appointed Alpha as the substantive Chief Electoral Commissioner of the ECSL, subject to the approval of Parliament. The appointment followed consultations in line with Section 32(3) of the 1991 Constitution and received endorsement from 12 of the country’s 14 registered political parties.

Following parliamentary approval, Alpha took the oath of office at the State House on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, in a ceremony presided over by President Bio.

In his remarks, the Chief Electoral Commissioner assured citizens and political stakeholders that the Commission’s leadership would strictly adhere to the Constitution and the legal frameworks governing elections. He also pledged to maintain an open-door policy, encouraging constructive engagement and objective dialogue with political parties and other stakeholders.
