Having read through the above mentioned bill tabled in parliament, it looks very good for the members of parliament. Cost of living is very high now and these MPs no doubt are offering invaluable service to our country.

So it is a proposed improvement in their conditions of service. It covers recess allowance, insurance, sitting fee, remuneration and traveling.

This has been done after comparing their conditions of service to other parliaments in Africa and across the world. But did they take into cognizance the state of our economy? This bill, if passed will make being an MP a very lucrative job.

The million- dollar question, is our economy strong for it?

And if other sectors ask for improved condition, can government afford it?

This is the legislature we are talking of, the third arm of government.  They are central to our democracy so they deserve better, though.

But if this bill which looks obvious to be passed is given the presidential assent are our MPs ready to give us value for money?

Already there are reports of incessant absenteeism and lack of ability by a good number of MPs to engage in meaningful debates.

There is going to be outcry from the public and some people will be calling on the president not to sign it into law. And signing it into law makes it appear as if the national cake is meant for only those at the top.

All others should feed from the crumbs.

President Bio must brace up for tough negotiations from other workers going forward.

I would rather have preferred government controlling inflation which will be for everyone’s benefit rather than improving conditions of service which is going to benefit only few people.

This is a situation of the mother feeding herself best before giving the remnants to the children. MPs are going to be very active in this particular debate and there is going to be a deafening yes (aye) when the speaker will ask ” if you are in favour………….”
