The Parliament of Sierra Leone has in a letter to the ministry of sports, National Sports Authority(NSA), and the Sierra Leone Football Association(SLFA) summoned them to committee Room one, to brief committee members on the national team’s( Leone Stars) recent Dubai trip to engage in a friendly match against Algeria B.
The committee on sport in parliament has requested for the different sports bodies to present the following:
– list of the 51-man delegation that went to Dubai(UAE)
– the total amount of money that they received from the government
And
– receipt and supporting documents of how taxpayers’ money was spent.
The three sports bodies are to meet the sports committee in parliament on November 30th, 2022.
The Leone Stars’ friendly match in Dubai has been tagged as dubious and not appropriate for the national team to engage in.
The ministry of sports and National sports Authority have been accused by the public of engaging in these matches as means to waste taxpayers’ money, considering the lack of results and improved performance of the National team.
Hon. Alusine Alu-Conteh the head of the Committee said the reason for inviting the three bodies is because their trip to Dubai in the friendly match against Algeria has great a Public outcry as to the money spent on the team and has raised concerns and they as members of Parliament want a clear explanation as to where the problem lies.
He confirmed this was not the first time they have been Summoned to Parliament it has happened Several times, noting their role is to do Oversight, the Committee on Sports is doing the Oversight for all the Sporting disciplines in the Country because they have the right to go and see all that happening when the National teams are traveled outside the Country.
After the Summons with the three bodies, they will have to submit a report to the Well of Parliament and also make it known to the public what they have gathered from the three sports bodies that are handling Sports in the country. Noting that when Leone Stars qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations the Speaker of Parliament called all those three bodies and Congrats them for their hard work in qualifying the Country for the Nations Cup after 25 years.
For the past five days, the General Public wants to know how the taxes payers have been used around the national team.
