Parliament Strengthens Oversight as 2026 National Budget Passed into Law

The Parliament of Sierra Leone on Friday, 19 December 2025, passed into law the Appropriation Act, 2026, following extended deliberations and detailed scrutiny, thereby reinforcing Parliament’s oversight role in the management of public finances.

The Bill, themed “Enhancing Domestic Revenue Mobilization to Sustain Economic Development for Service Delivery,” authorizes expenditure from the Consolidated Fund for the 2026 financial year and makes provision for other related fiscal matters.

Prior to its passage, the proposed budget underwent rigorous examination at the Committee of Supply stage, during which Members of Parliament reviewed sectoral allocations and introduced amendments aimed at strengthening accountability, promoting fiscal discipline, and ensuring value for money.

The approved 2026 National Budget stands at NLe 27,717,307,300, reflecting the government’s priorities of sustaining economic growth while improving service delivery across key sectors nationwide.

With the enactment of the Appropriation Act, Parliament has formally approved the government’s spending plans for 2026 and reaffirmed its commitment to continuous oversight, ensuring that public funds are utilized efficiently and translated into tangible benefits for citizens.
