The Parliamentary Committee on Ethics and Privileges, in the Parliament of Sierra Leone , chaired by Hon. P. C. Alhaji Alie Badara Sheriff III representing Bonthe District has on Saturday 06/08/2022 amicably resolved the fracas between Hon. Simeon Fefegula and James Kowie, the District Youth Leader, and overall conflicts in the district. It could be recalled that, the Member of Parliament for Constituency 096 lodged a complaint to Parliament against James Kowie that, he slapped him, in his Constituency in Moyamba Town, Moyamba District.
During the peace accord at the Town Court Barray, James apologized to Hon. Fefegula and asked for forgiveness. He also assured the committee and audience that, he would never associate himself with such an unfortunate action.
James Kowie said he knew his people were disappointed in him and recalled that, he had never hurt anybody and that action was the work of the devil. He informed the audience that, the MP is his Uncle and expressed hope of resolving the matter amicably. He continued to appeal to the MP and assured the Committee of perpetual peace and unity. He advised his people to predicate the accord on peace message and not to trigger of the matter negatively.
Representatives of youths, women, elders, traditional authorities and others stakeholders who made statements at the meeting, categorically condemned the unwarranted action of James Kowie and apologized on his behalf to the Committee and the MP.
Hon. Simeon Fefegula while responding recalled that, on Saturday 19 July 2022, when the incidence occurred, his people demonstrated with solidarity to react, but he admonished them. He informed the audience how patience and compromise had engendered the peace talks to that level.
“On behalf of my constituents, James had pleaded and apologized, let us forgive him” he stated and went on to say, “Myself as a human being has forgiven him” he assured and disclosed that James is his Nephew.
Earlier, the Chairman and entire Committee Members preached the message of peace, respect, unity and development.
All other stakeholders, including Paramount Chiefs, who made meaningful statements, promoted the agenda for peace and development and also expressed remorse to what happened to the Member of Parliament.
However, most of those who made statements at the peace building, alleged that a Marshal Group, call Issa Kabba or 30 Man”s Squad is mobilizing youths to intimidate, brutalize and embarrass residents in that district.
The ceremony was climaxed by an undertaking for sustainable peace, unity and harmony. The document, was signed by James Kowie, Youth Representative, Women and others stakeholders.
