On Thursday, 26 February 2026, the Parliament of Sierra Leone paid tribute to the late Hon. Mariama Ella Goba, former Member of Parliament representing Kenema District, during an official lying-in-state ceremony. Wreaths were laid, and a book of condolence was opened and signed to honor her life and service.
The Director of the Parliamentary and Public Relations Department, Sheku Lamin Turay, described Hon. Goba as a committed lawmaker and seasoned politician who served the nation with dedication. He noted that she was a renowned citizen, public servant, mother, and parliamentarian.
In his tribute, Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma, highlighted Hon. Goba as a champion of women who transformed many lives in Sierra Leone, particularly in Kenema. He acknowledged the challenges she faced, including political opposition and insults, and encouraged mourners to emulate her humanity, humility, and courage.
Deputy Minority Leader 2, Hon. Aaron Aruna Koroma, praised her diligence and intelligence, emphasizing her commitment to the people of Sierra Leone and noting that her passing reminds all of life’s fragility.
Simeon Goba, one of her sons, described his mother as a strong woman devoted to protecting the lives of girls and women nationwide. He said, “It’s going to be difficult without mom, but with love and passion, we shall overcome it.” He added that she instilled in him values of selflessness, integrity, and compassion.
Hon. Neneh Lebbie, Deputy Whip of the Government Bench, recalled Hon. Goba’s dedication to parliamentary duties, including her consistent presence during roll calls. She noted that the Committee on Fisheries, in particular, will miss her resilience.
Hon. Bernadette Wuyatta Songa, President of the Parliamentary Female Caucus, observed that the deceased transcended political divides, impacting both SLPP and APC women in Parliament. She described Hon. Goba as a woman who could “light a room with her smile” and praised her commitment to parliamentary activities and friendship.
The ceremony, moderated by Sheku Lamin Turay, underscored Hon. Mariama Ella Goba’s significant contributions to Sierra Leone’s development, parliamentary governance, and women’s empowerment.
