In a significant move towards institutional reform, Sierra Leone’s Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic has unanimously approved 11 nominees for crucial chairperson and board member positions on Tuesday, June 4th, 2024. The approval, spanning various essential institutions, marks a pivotal step in the country’s governance and administrative enhancement.

Among the approved nominees are Dr. Willette PRO James, proposed Chairperson of the Board of Trustees for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC); Mr. Ibrahim Nyelenkeh, proposed Chairman of the National Sports Authority of Sierra Leone (NSA); Hon. Bintu Ndoella Myyers, proposed Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration; and Dr. Vandy Konneh, proposed Chairman of the National Commission for Persons with Disability, among others.

The commencement of the approval process was led by the Leader of Government Business and the Majority, Hon. Mathew S Nyuma, who also chairs the Appointment Committee. Hon. Nyuma provided a detailed overview of the nominees’ qualifications, educational backgrounds, and professional experiences, emphasizing the rigorous interview process conducted by the committee.

The Leader spotlighted the qualifications and achievements of each nominee, beginning with Dr. Willette PRO James, praising her esteemed media and communications expertise. Similarly, Mr. Ibrahim Nyelenkeh’s exceptional leadership in sports, including efforts to revitalize Sierra Leone’s presence in international football and infrastructure development, was highlighted.

However, during the proceedings, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, raised critical questions regarding the progress and transformation of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) compared to similar institutions in neighboring African countries. He emphasized the need for SLBC to transition from analog to digital broadcasting and urged nominees to prioritize this transformation.

Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay expressed appreciation for the diverse nominees selected by His Excellency the President, highlighting the significance of women’s representation in leadership roles. She encouraged nominees to prioritize national interests over personal agendas and address challenges effectively.

Additionally, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara commended Mr. Ibrahim Nyelenkeh’s pivotal role in revitalizing football in Sierra Leone and expressed concerns about challenges facing the Guma Valley Water Company, urging for improvements in water supply services.

Overall, the unanimous approval of these nominees signifies Parliament’s commitment to advancing governance and institutional effectiveness in Sierra Leone. The newly appointed officials are expected to leverage their expertise and leadership to drive positive change and contribute to national development.
