The Paramount Chief of Fallah Wandor Chiefdom, PC Larry Sao Bojon Fangawa, has made an urgent appeal to the Government of Sierra Leone, humanitarian organisations, and philanthropists to intervene following a devastating flood that has displaced hundreds of residents in Baama Town, a riverside community located along the Sewa River.

In an official communication last Friday, Chief Fangawa reported that the flooding has wreaked havoc on homes, farmlands, and local infrastructure, leaving families homeless and without access to basic necessities. Residents are currently facing food shortages, contaminated water sources, and limited access to healthcare.

“As the Paramount Chief, I am saddened and deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of my community members,” Chief Fangawa stated in his appeal.

“With schools about to reopen, it is imperative that we provide a safe and healthy environment for our children to return to school.”

The flood, triggered by heavy rainfall and the overflow of the Sewa River, has submerged large parts of Baama Town. Community leaders report that many families are now sheltering in temporary structures or have been forced to stay with relatives in neighbouring villages.

Agricultural lands the main source of livelihood for the community have also been devastated, raising fears of food insecurity in the coming weeks.

Chief Fangawa has appealed for emergency relief supplies, including Food items, clean drinking water, wlothing and bedding and medical supplies.

He also emphasized the need for hands-on assistance in distributing relief materials, providing health services, and helping families rebuild their homes.

“We are also seeking cash support to procure additional resources and fund long-term recovery efforts, especially as the community prepares for the reopening of schools,” he said.

The disaster comes at a critical time, just as the new academic year is set to begin in September. Parents and guardians fear that the displacement and loss of property may prevent many children from returning to school, worsening the crisis.

Additionally, health risks have increased due to stagnant floodwaters, which raise the threat of cholera, diarrhea, and malaria outbreaks.

Chief Fangawa has made his contact details available to facilitate the coordination of relief efforts and direct support. He underscored that assistance from the government, NGOs, and private citizens could make a meaningful difference in the lives of the affected families.

“Immediate support will not only alleviate suffering but also restore hope to those who have lost everything. Together, we can help rebuild lives and ensure that children can safely return to school.”
