The Vice Chancellor and Principal of Njala University, Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, has called on business investors to partner with the institution through sustainable public–private partnerships, particularly in the construction of modern hostels and lecture facilities.
He made the appeal on Wednesday, 9 December 2025, while delivering the keynote address at the university’s 2025 Matriculation Ceremony, held at the Njala University Torwama Campus in Bo.
Professor Koroma revealed that Njala University is experiencing rapid and “geometric” growth in student enrolment, a situation he described as “alarming” due to the increasing pressure on existing infrastructure. The university now hosts more than 18,000 students, far exceeding its originally designed capacity.
The Vice Chancellor stressed the urgent need for additional hostels, classrooms, and other learning spaces. He encouraged private investors to take advantage of the opportunity to construct rentable facilities that would benefit both students and the administration.
Highlighting the institution’s academic achievements, Professor Koroma noted that Njala University has maintained its position as Sierra Leone’s leading university for three consecutive years, based on academic excellence and internationally recognised quality standards.
He congratulated the 2025 cohort of freshmen, describing them as the fortunate few admitted out of more than 8,000 applicants, with fewer than 4,000 securing places. He reminded students that matriculation is not only a formal admission exercise but also a solemn tradition requiring them to take an oath to uphold the university’s rules and values. This includes signing the matriculation register and receiving identification numbers, which he referred to as a “personal legacy” and an essential part of their academic journey.
Professor Koroma encouraged the new students to make the most of their 27-month academic period, urging them to prioritise their studies and research to graduate with distinction.
The ceremony attracted university staff, students, parents, and invited guests, marking yet another milestone in Njala University’s commitment to educational excellence and national development.
