In an effort to bolster cross-border security cooperation and knowledge exchange, a contingent of thirty-two student officers from Course 46 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Jaji, Kaduna, Nigeria, are currently undertaking a comprehensive study tour in Sierra Leone. The visit, spearheaded by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, aims to deepen understanding and collaboration on various aspects of military operations and governance between the two nations.
Led by Brigadier General Alhassan Grema, Director of Coordination at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Nigeria, the team comprises twenty-nine male and three female officers. Their itinerary includes research activities focused on diverse areas of study, particularly on security issues relevant to both countries.
The significance of this exchange was underscored during a joint session held at the Parliament of Sierra Leone. Mr. Alfred Lahai, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, highlighted the visit as a pivotal opportunity to reinforce cooperation in security-related matters between the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Sierra Leone Armed Forces, and relevant institutions, particularly emphasizing the Ministry’s role in overseeing key security agencies and internal security operations.
During the parliamentary session, Honourable Alex Mattia Rogers, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence, emphasized the importance of good governance in military operations, shedding light on the critical role of parliament in ensuring operational efficiency, legislative oversight, and representation within security forces.
The engagement facilitated insightful exchanges between the visiting officers and Sierra Leonean counterparts, with discussions ranging from the current security landscape to operational challenges and achievements. Mrs. Elizabeth Turay, Director of Police Affairs in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, provided perspectives on internal security matters, while the parliamentary committee delved into the legislative framework and oversight mechanisms governing security forces.
As both nations navigate complex security dynamics, this collaborative initiative serves as a testament to their commitment to fostering regional stability and enhancing bilateral relations. The ongoing dialogue and knowledge-sharing endeavors are expected to yield tangible outcomes in bolstering security cooperation and addressing common challenges faced by the two nations.
