Newly Country Representative for WHO Meets with Minister of Health to Strengthen Healthcare

The newly appointed World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative to Sierra Leone, Dr. George Ameh, officially commenced his duties with a courtesy visit to the Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Austin Demby, on December 3rd 2024.

The meeting which was held at Ministry of Health’s headquarters in Freetown, marked a significant development in the ongoing partnership between the global health body and Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health.

Dr. Ameh expressed his enthusiasm about taking up his new role in Sierra Leone.

His visit highlighted WHO’s commitment to supporting the Ministry of Health’s goals of fostering quality health outcomes and strengthening the country’s healthcare system.

The meeting served as an opportunity to align strategies and reinforce the mutual objective of improving public health services in Sierra Leone.

The visit underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between WHO and national health authorities in tackling pressing health challenges.

Sierra Leone has faced numerous health crises in recent years, including the Ebola outbreak and the ongoing challenges posed by maternal and child health issues, infectious diseases, and limited healthcare infrastructure.

Dr. Ameh’s arrival is expected to enhance WHO’s technical and operational support to Sierra Leone, particularly in key areas such as disease prevention, health system strengthening, and capacity building.

His leadership will  play a pivotal role in accelerating progress toward universal health coverage and other national health targets.
