During the government’s weekly press conference on January 23rd, 2024, Deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education, Yusuf Keketoma Sandy, announced a commendable initiative by the Sierra Leone government to alleviate transportation challenges for citizens residing in the capital city. Starting from January 30th to February 1st, 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Aviation will provide free bus trips from 6 am to 10 pm.

Mr. Sandy highlighted that this initiative, named ‘Waka Fine,’ follows the recent launch of new buses by the President. The free bus service will operate in two corridors: the East corridor, from Wallace Johnson street [Bus Station] to Calbatown, and the West corridor, from the same Bus Station to Lumley.

He emphasized that the free service is a temporary measure, and starting on February 2nd, 2024, the government will begin collecting payments from passengers for the bus trips. To ensure the smooth operation of the buses, the government has established a Metro Transport Limited Company. Mr. Sandy provided details about the company’s role and its shareholders, who include the Kekkeh Riders Union and Bus Driver Union.

The Deputy Minister informed the press that the Sierra Leone Public Transport Authority will regulate the operation of ‘Waka Fine’ buses within the specified East and West corridors. He also mentioned that the Ministry of Transport and Aviation has outlined the specific routes for the buses and restricted them from commuting in certain areas.

This initiative aims to address transportation challenges in Freetown and demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving citizens’ daily lives through accessible and affordable public transportation.
