The North-East Region Football Association (NERFA) on 28th March, officially commenced the 2026 Talent Development Scheme (TDS) Youth League in Tonkolili District. The Tonkolili District zone features eight teams across both the Under-15 and Under-17 boys’.
The opening ceremony at the Magburaka Town Field saw Western Stars U17 face Rising Sun U17, with Rising Sun securing a 2-0 victory. In the second fixture of the day, Future Stars FC triumphed over Young Stars FC with a 2-1 win in the U15 category.
The TDS is a flagship initiative under the Sierra Leone Football Association’s (SLFA) Youth Development Program. Its primary objective is to nurture young talents, instill discipline, and provide structured pathways for players to progress from grassroots to elite levels.
The event was graced by NERFA Technical Officer, Abu Bakarr Kamara, who represented both SLFA and NERFA. His role underscores the importance of technical oversight in ensuring that the league meets national standards.
The youth league will continue across the North-East Region. On Wednesday, 1st April, Bombali District will commence its edition under the supervision of the Bombali District Football Association (BDFA), with eight teams participating in both categories. Koinadugu and Falaba districts are also set to launch their competitions in the coming weeks.
At the conclusion of the district leagues, a selection of 30 of the finest young players across the U15 and U17 categories will be made. These players will represent the North-East Region at the national level, ensuring that the best talents are showcased and given opportunities to advance their football careers.
