In a joint press release issued on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet), has issued an early warning advisory cautioning the public about moderate to heavy rainfall expected in parts of the country over the next two days.
According to the advisory, significant rainfall is forecasted for the Southern and Western Regions between Wednesday, August 27 and Thursday, August 28, which could result in flash floods, waterlogging, and other rain-related hazards.
Both agencies have strongly urged residents particularly those living in flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures to ensure personal safety and protect property.
Key Safety Tips from NDMA and SLMet including avoiding flooded areas and weak or damaged bridges, relocate to higher or safer ground if necessary, keep children indoors and away from open drains and water channels, farmers should take steps to protect their crops and livestock and properly dispose of waste to prevent the blockage of drainage systems.
The Communications Directorate of the NDMA emphasized that disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility, encouraging communities to remain alert, follow official advisories, and cooperate with local disaster response teams.
“This is a critical time in the rainy season, and we are calling on all citizens to stay vigilant,” the statement said. “We are working closely with local authorities to ensure that timely response mechanisms are in place should the need arise.”
Additionally, the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet) reaffirmed the NDMA’s forecast, stating that the agency is closely monitoring weather systems and will provide real-time updates as conditions develop.
The public is advised to stay tuned to radio, television, and official social media channels for further announcements and to report emergencies to the appropriate authorities.
