In response to the growing threat of cyberattacks, the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NC3) has taken proactive steps to safeguard government data by conducting a specialized training session for civil servants from the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE).

The session, held on Tuesday, August 20, was led by NC3’s Director, Victor Sesay, who provided critical insights into the rapidly evolving landscape of cybersecurity threats. Key topics included the increasing risks of phishing attacks, social engineering, and the emerging dangers posed by deep fake technology.

Sesay highlighted the importance of using robust and unique passwords, especially for civil servants who handle sensitive government information. He cautioned against the use of easily accessible personal details, such as birthdates and phone numbers, in password creation, as these can be easily exploited by cybercriminals.

A significant portion of the training focused on the dangers of deep fake technology. Sesay illustrated the potential harm with a striking example where a teacher’s voice was convincingly replicated using deep fake technology, leading to confusion among students and parents.

In addition to Sesay’s presentation, Gemma Pyne-Bailey, NC3’s Training and Outreach Specialist, provided practical advice on digital hygiene. She emphasized the importance of using licensed software and adhering to strict security protocols to protect both devices and sensitive data. Pyne-Bailey also offered guidance on better password management and securing digital environments effectively.

This training session is part of NC3’s ongoing efforts to equip Sierra Leone’s civil servants with the knowledge and tools necessary to defend against the increasingly sophisticated cyber threats facing the nation’s public sector. As cyberattacks grow in complexity, continuous education and awareness are essential to maintaining the integrity of Sierra Leone’s digital infrastructure.

NC3’s commitment to these initiatives underscores its dedication to building a more secure digital future for the country.
