International NBA basketball instructor Joe Touomo has called on coaches in Sierra Leone and across Africa to put an end to internal conflicts and instead channel their energy into developing young athletes. He emphasized that nurturing talent should be the foremost priority, stressing that infighting contributes nothing to the growth of basketball on the continent.

Touomo observed that in many African countries, coaches spend excessive time competing for recognition and ownership, which deprives young players of meaningful training opportunities. This, he said, is one of the key reasons African athletes often underperform on the international stage.

Highlighting the rapid evolution of basketball globally, he underscored the urgent need to focus on teaching fundamental skills to young players in Sierra Leone. According to him, youths engaged in the Sierra Leone Basketball Federation’s programs have shown great enthusiasm and a strong ability to grasp the core concepts of the game.

Touomo stressed the importance of having well-trained, knowledgeable coaches capable of guiding these athletes toward success at the international level. Based on his interactions during training sessions, he expressed optimism about the future of the Sierra Leone Basketball Federation.

During the recent three-day Youth Camp held at Siaka Stevens Stadium, the Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, encouraged athletes to take their training seriously. She noted that basketball has the potential to open opportunities for them and enhance their skills for the benefit of Sierra Leone. The Minister expressed high expectations for improved performance following the camp and emphasized the need for athletes to deliver results.

She also extended her appreciation to the Sierra Leone Basketball Federation and encouraged other sporting disciplines to emulate their commitment to empowering athletes through training and education.

Solomon Kamara, a participant from Red Flames, described the Youth Camp as extremely beneficial, saying he had gained significant knowledge over the past four days. He thanked the Basketball Federation for organizing such a valuable program.
