As part of its ongoing efforts to promote gender inclusivity and youth empowerment, the National Youth Commission (NAYCOM) participated in the official orientation ceremony for the third cohort of 300 young women and girls enrolled in non-traditional skills training at the Armed Forces Technical Education College (AFTEC) in Freetown.

This cohort marks a significant milestone in a continuing initiative aimed at empowering young women through practical, in-demand skills that challenge traditional gender roles in the workforce. The program is part of a broader national strategy aligned with President Julius Maada Bio’s “Five Game Changers” agenda, which prioritizes human capital development as a key driver of sustainable economic growth and national transformation.

Addressing the gathering, NAYCOM Commissioner Ahmed Atata Mansaray Esq. reaffirmed the Commission’s strong commitment to youth development, particularly among marginalized groups such as women and girls. He highlighted key aspects of the program, including its funding sources, structure, and the administration of stipends to support participants during their training.

Commissioner Mansaray assured the trainees that the government, in collaboration with development partners, has made adequate provisions to supply all necessary training kits and equipment. These tools will be provided throughout the course of the program and upon completion, ensuring a smooth transition from training to employment or entrepreneurship.

He encouraged participants to remain dedicated and focused throughout the duration of the program. “Your success in this program is not only a personal achievement but also a beacon of hope and inspiration for other young women in your communities,” he said.

Emphasizing the collaborative efforts involved, the Commissioner praised the joint work of AFTEC, NAYCOM, and other institutional stakeholders in making the program a success. He expressed confidence that the skills acquired would enhance employability, foster innovation, and promote self-reliance among the youth.

The initiative continues to attract national attention for challenging stereotypes and advancing gender equality by encouraging women to explore career paths in fields traditionally dominated by men, such as engineering, welding, plumbing, and electrical installation. As the new cohort embarks on their training journey, the program remains a powerful tool for transformation, empowerment, and inclusive development.
